Columbia Pictures and Red Wagon have tapped scribes Andrew Jay Cohen and Brendan O'Brien to adapt the upcoming book "The Worthy: A Ghost's Story" by Will Clarke.
The subversive college comedy centers on a fraternity pledge so obsessed with a girl that even his accidental death does not stand in the way of his pursuit of her.
Red Wagon's Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher will produce.
"These two writers have an unusual ability to mix very edgy, inventive humor with elements of classic storytelling," Wick said.
Wick and Fisher have produced such adult dramas as "Memoirs of a Geisha" and "Jarhead" through their Sony-based shingle. But Wick also has dabbled in themes of adolescent angst by producing such films as "The Craft" and "Girl, Interrupted."
"Like 'The Craft' was a fresh way to talk about high school life, ('The Worthy') is a very fresh and inventive way to explore college life," Wick added.
The book will be published by Simon & Schuster next month.
Rachel Shane is shepherding the project for Red Wagon.
Cohen and O'Brien rose through the comedic ranks as Judd Apatow proteges. Cohen recently served as associate producer on "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" and the upcoming Will Ferrell starrer "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby."
Paramount Vantage recently acquired a comedy pitch based on Cohen's
short "American Storage," which O'Brien wrote (HR 5/15). Cohen will
direct the feature-length adaptation from a screenplay penned by the
pair.
They are repped by ICM and manager Brian Lutz.
